309 Road photo:
Waiau Waterworks

The famous old 309 road links Coromandel Town to Whitianga on the east coast. The route is both winding and scenic (drive slowly and carefully, most of the road is unsealed) and provides many opportunities on the way. Try the short walk to the attractive Waiau Falls and swimming hole or the ten minute walk to the Waiau Kauri Grove for a close up look at the giant kauri trees which once covered most of the Coromandel region. There are also several picnic places and the ‘not to be missed’ Waiau Waterworks is a three acre garden filled with fun for all ages: pottery, honey shop, cafe and an amazing array of water powered gadgets.

Driving Creek Railway & Potteries

A 1 hour ride through replanted Kauri forest on a narrow gauge railway with artistic surprises on the way and a superb view from the terminus.  Pottery and sculpture for sale. Trains run daily 10am and 2pm.  Many extra trains over summer and on holidays.  3km from the town centre on the Kennedy Bay Road. Bookings advisable.

Walks

The Coromandel is a walker's dream with a centre dominated by a range of jagged mountains and its fringes scattered with picturesque coves and beaches.

Coromandel
Coastal Walkway

The walkway is from Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay located at the very top of the peninsula. Alternatively the walk can be done in reverse.

The walk provides great views of the coastline and offshore islands (Great Barrier Island, Cuvier, Mercury Islands, etc.). Visitors have the option of doing the walk return (6- 8 hours walking time ) or joining an organised tour with Coromandel Discovery Tours who collect visitors from Coromandel town, drop them at Fletcher Bay and pick them up at Stony Bay and return them to Coromandel town.

Bush & Birds

This part of the Coromandel forms a natural sanctuary for wildlife. Cave wetas, rare native frogs and large centipedes (check your sleeping bags!) can be found in the hills. Regenerating native forest includes kauri, puriri and a large range of ferns. Birdlife includes the tui, bellbird, fantail, kingfisher, kiwi, harrier hawk and seabirds including large numbers of gannets on an island colony.
